As you know from her interviews and the title of the album alone, Mary J. Blige’s latest project is a very personal one. And in addition to the music, she wanted to let her fans know how the whole thing came together and where she was mentally and emotionally as she was recording. So tomorrow the singer will debut her The Making Of: Strength of a Woman. documentary on VH1.
Narrated by her friend and long time collaborator, Diddy, the documentary shows Mary trying to finish the album while gearing up for the process of divorcing her now estranged husband Kendu Isaacs.
In the clip, we hear Mary say,
“[Divorce is] not something I wanted to do but I had no choice. I’m not writing an album preaching to anyone about what they should do. I’m literally trying to heal myself through writing, singing, through some kind of way, getting it out of my system.”
Blige had a screening for the film in Atlanta and fans reacted pretty strongly to one scene, in which she not only referenced Beyoncé’s Lemonade, she confirmed rumors that Kendu was out here with someone who Mary once considered a friend.
The Making Of: Strength of a Woman premieres May 2 at 11 p.m. on VH1.
